Match Report by Bipin Patel - Kent win a humdinger!

Kent Under 17 girls beat Essex in their opening match of the 2009 season in a sensational manner at the BAE ground in Hoo on Saturday 16th May 2009.

Essex won the toss and asked Kent to bat first on a turgid surface with uneven bounce. Kent openers Jennifer Hamer and Riti Patel had a testing time against some accurate Essex bowling supported by tight fielding.

Beth Langston got an early breakthrough for Essex by trapping Hamer leg before wicket when the score was 19.  Scoring was never easy and wickets fell at regular intervals and Kent finished their innings on 132 for 7 off 45 overs.  Hannah Mowbray (30) was the top-scorer for Kent with Riti Patel (20), Deanna Cooper (20) and Elysa Hubbard (19) making useful contributions.

Essex started their pursuit of the modest target in sunny conditions. Dee Tress bowled with purpose for Kent and got a much needed wicket in her third over with the score on 11 but Lauren Onojaife, as watchful as ever and Elissa Penketh steadied the Essex innings taking the score to 57 before Penketh was run out with a direct hit by Emma Perry.

With intermittent sunshine and strong breeze blowing across the ground the pitch was playing a lot easier and boundaries started coming with increasing frequency in a quicker outfield.

Essex made steady progress largely due to sensible batting by Onojaife who was in a determined mood to carry the team to victory.

With the score on 120 for 5 in the 40th over it looked all over for Kent until Deanna Cooper, who had extracted some disconcerting bounce throughout her second spell, bowled Jennifer Lees and Tia Moore off successive deliveries, finishing her overs with outstanding figures of 2 for 10 off 9 overs.

Just in case this wasn’t decisive enough she took an astonishing catch at silly mid-on off the very next delivery bowled by Lilly Summers to dismiss Lauren for 66 exposing the Essex tail-enders to the now rampant Kent girls. Scoring soon dried up and Essex could only manage 8 more runs in 4 overs finishing on 128 for 9 leaving Kent winners by just 4 runs!
