The Under 15 boys travelled to Market Harborough, Leicestershire on Sunday 23 August to contest the U15 County Championship Finals. Unfortunately weather played a part in the overall result, washing out the final game against the eventual winners, Wales, on the final day.
The first game on the Monday was played at Langtons CC against Nottinghamshire. Kent lost the toss, which became a featutre of the festival, and were inserted. After a very solid second wicket partnership of 92 wickets began to fall regularly. Kent finally ended up on 225 all out from 57 overs. In reply, Notts also got off to a flyer and looked totally in control at 79/1. However, scoreboard pressure and the economical spinners bowling overs quickly contributed to a steady fall of wickets (Coldman 19-5-42-4; Robinson 19-4-53-4). Notts seemed reluctant to chase the par score, despite the reasonable run rate. Their innings eventually closed on 179/8 from 53 overs. Amazingly, the points split was 10 each.
The competition progressed with a game against Lancashire on the main pitch at the stunning facility of Kibworth CC. After loosing the important toss with the threat of rain later in the day, Lancashire seized the initiative with several early wickets, their attack being well led by Jump 8-5-12-4 and assisted by Williams 6-1-20-4. Despite the patience of Charlie Speller, who was last man out on 30 from 95 balls in 111 minutes, Kent slumped to their lowest score for over eight years, 76 all out from 34.1 overs, just after lunch. The Lancashire reply was direct and they ended up knocking off the runs without loss in 18 overs. The severity of defeat meant that, barring a miracle, Kent would not be retaining their U15 National Championship title.
The final game against Wales once again saw Kent loose the toss on a rain soaked morning. After a delayed start the players were on and off. Kent stuttered to 98/6, loosing regular wickets along the way. The game was finally abandoned as a draw after tea when it was apparent there would be no play possible for the rest of the day.
The weather therefore had the final say in deciding this years U15 County Championship - gifting the trophy to Wales on the strength of their day one win against Lancashire. The remaining places were all close, with Lancashire finishing runners up, Notts in third and Kent in fourth. Although this overall outcome is creditable it did not do the team justice for what was a very good season, beating some excellent teams along the way and only loosing to a decent Surrey team in a game we should have won.
