90-5 (20.2 overs) (Hollie Summers 25 retired not out, Rowena Squires 12 not out)

Kent Under 11 Girls Won by 5 Wickets

With Essex unable to raise a side, the fixture was re-arranged with the Kent Under 11 Girls taking on a local club boys team for first time this season.

LBH Under 10 Boys won the toss and elected to bat first. In spite of accurate bowling by the Kent girls, particularly from Hollie Summers and Tammy Roscoe, the boys made a good start and were 41-3 after ten overs. Acting captain Luisa Madgwick (Castle Hill) worked up a good pace downhill and with the wind behind her.

Then Kent girls took a firm grip on the game with Maisy Blackbourn (Bapchild), Georgia Summers (Sandwich Town) and Krishna Vadgama (Hayes Hurricanes) taking three quick wickets to remove the Leeds and Broomfield middle order and reduce the home side to 57-6.

The boys rallied towards the end seeing out the 25 overs to finish on 89-8.

Kent girls made an encouraging start in reply but hard hitting Phillipa Hempfrey (Hythe & Sibton Park) was out to a good catch with the score on 19. Hollie Summers (Holmesdale Ladies & Sandwich Town) came in and smashed her way to the retirement score of 25 in 9 scoring shots which put Kent Girls in control.

Opener Rowena Squires’ (Staplehurst) patient 12 not out in 14 overs kept the innings together and was retired when the situation appeared safe. Three wickets fell in quick succession, however, Kent girls were in such a strong position that reaching the target of 90 was never in doubt, and several retirements enabled most of the batting line up to spend time at the crease.

Kent’s quick running between the wickets was again a feature in their successful run chase over the boys, but generally it was a good all round performance with everyone making a positive contribution from the girls squad.

We would like to thank John Higgs, Leeds and Broomfield CC and Tony Cotton of the Tower House Ground for making this match possible. The next game is against Sussex at Wye CC on Sunday 24th August, 2pm start.

LBH is the Junior’s Section of Leeds and Broomfield Cricket Club.

Both hit some lusty boundaries, which included two sixes from Hollie Summers, a rare feat at Under11 girls level.

Kent’s middle and lower order chipped in with useful runs to keep the score ticking over towards to a creditable 108 after 25 overs.

In reply, Hampshire set up a solid platform and were well placed 36-2 after 10 overs. However, Kent’s depth of bowling and splendid outfield catching proved too strong for the home side’s batting line up. Hampshire collapsed to 68 all out, with eight wickets going down for just 32 runs in the next 13 overs.

Once again there were contributions from most of the Kent 13 player squad, with seven of Kent’s twelve bowlers used each taking at least one wicket. Although Kent were clearly the better side, Hampshire only scored 19 runs off the bat which meant that their total of 68 was helped by too many wides and no balls. So, in spite of winning two out of two, there is still plenty of room for improvement for the Kent team.

Here’s a slideshow of the photos taken that day. All courtesy of Francis Squires!

That made it three wins out of three but the visitors made the home side work hard all the way for their victory in what was the toughest encounter of the season.

Put in on a firm pitch at the superb Provender CC ground, Kent made quick progress compared with previous starts. Hesitation in the middle of the pitch caused Phillipa Hempfrey (Hythe & Sibton Park) to be run out. Runs continued to flow for Kent as captain Hannah Mount (St Lawrence & Highland Court) and Hollie Summers (Sandwich Town & The crowd, which included a record number of grandparents, were in rapture as the St Lawrence & Highland Court player stroked a stunning cover boundary. Coach David Sear reckoned it was one of the most perfectly executed strokes he had seen in ten years of Kent Under 11 Girls cricket.

Bryony Wicks (St Lawrence & Highland Court) and Phoebe Franklin (Colfeians Girls) were run out going for quick runs at the end, nevertheless, Kent reached their highest total of the season thanks to some excellent running between the wickets by Rowena Squires (Staplehurst) and Luisa Madgwick (Castle Hill). They both hit their highest scores.

Oxfordshire were not daunted facing a large total. Their positive hitting and running put Kent’s fielders under pressure creating mistakes in the field. Kent’s bowling may have been steady and more accurate than usual but simple catches went down and there were several over throws. Bryony Wick’s sharp run out with a direct hit (her second one of the season) was the only bright spot in what was a disappointing fielding display.

Oxfordshire threatened to reach the target. They scored more runs off the bat than previous opponents, but Kent’s bowling gradually got on top and the visitors fell behind the required run rate. Amy Youpa (Colfeians Girls) was again effective in her two overs, however, the game was wrapped up in the 23rd over as Krishna Vadgama’s (Hayes Hurricanes) brilliant hat trick cleaned up the tail.

She clean bowled the first two and the third was a high catch taken by second keeper Hollie Summers. Ecstatic scenes naturally followed. Martins and Tammy Roscoe (Colfeians Girls) were both bowled as Surrey brought back their opening attack. Only 16 runs were added in the last six overs. Kent’s final total of 96 was desperately short.

In contrast to Kent, thanks to some loose bowling, Surrey’s innings exploded with a series of fours and the home side raced to 32 in five overs. Kent did not help their cause by dropping catches, and the ground fielding was not much better.

Kent did manage to slow Surrey’s progress around the ten over mark, but Kent’s bowlers could not bowl a consistent line and length and, therefore, could not exert any pressure to force mistakes. With time on their side, the Surrey batsmen batted sensibly, keeping out all of Kent’s good balls, and hitting the bad ones.

Surrey comfortably reached their target off 19 overs to inflict Kent’s first defeat of the season.
