Match Report:
Kent Under 11s started their 2008 season with a convincing win over Essex.

Electing to bat first on an excellent and surprisingly firm pitch considering the recent wet weather, Kent lost vice captain Luisa Madgwick early on but then Philippa Hempfrey and Hollie Summers came together to forge a fifty run partnership which was the mainstay of Kent’s innings.  They ran well, hit the ball powerfully to all parts and both reached the 25 retirement score. 
 
Captain Hannah Mount added useful runs towards the end, receiving good support from Shottie Hopkins and Rowena Squires.  Marina Barwick hit two fours in the final over to help Kent reach a very respectable total of 134-4.
 
In reply, Essex started brightly but a brilliant piece of fielding by Bryony Wicks ran out their captain with the score on 12.  It was possibly the turning point of the match because she was their best batsman, and the rest of the Essex batsman did not offer much resistance against Kent’s reasonably accurate bowling.
 
Seven of Kent’s twelve bowlers used each took a wicket to dismiss Essex for 70 in the final over.
 
There may be room for improvement in the bowling and fielding, however, everyone contributed well to enable us to start the season with a win.  It was also a satisfying performance considering that Essex had beaten Kent three times last season.

Match Report
Kent Under 11s continued their unbeaten 2008 season with a comfortable win away to Hampshire.

Put in on a slow pitch at the ‘picture postcard’ Hurstbourne Priors CC ground, complete with lych gate entrance and thatched pavilion backdrop, Kent started cautiously and then lost Phillipa Hempfrey with the score on two.

Captain Hannah Mount was joined by Hollie Summers and together the run rate accelerated and a fifty run partnership ensued. Both hit some lusty boundaries, which included two sixes from Hollie Summers, a rare feat at Under11 girls level.

Kent’s middle and lower order chipped in with useful runs to keep the score ticking over towards to a creditable 108 after 25 overs.

In reply, Hampshire set up a solid platform and were well placed 36-2 after 10 overs. However, Kent’s depth of bowling and splendid outfield catching proved too strong for the home side’s batting line up. Hampshire collapsed to 68 all out, with eight wickets going down for just 32 runs in the next 13 overs.

Once again there were contributions from most of the Kent 13 player squad, with seven of Kent’s twelve bowlers used each taking at least one wicket. Although Kent were clearly the better side, Hampshire only scored 19 runs off the bat which meant that their total of 68 was helped by too many wides and no balls. So, in spite of winning two out of two, there is still plenty of room for improvement for the Kent team.

Kent Lost by 8 Wickets
Kent Under 11 girls lost their 100% record in 2008 by losing away to a well organised Surrey side.  Although Kent were missing Hollie Summers due to illness, there can be no excuses in what was a lacklustre performance in most aspects of the game.

Invited to bat first, Kent never really recovered from an awful start, with Megan Belt (Margate) and Phillipa  Hemphfrey (Hythe & Sibton Park) back in the pavilion in the second over.  Rowena Squires (Staplehurst) and captain Hannah Mount (St Lawrence & Highland Court) ran lots of quick singles, retrieving the situation to 24-2 after 8 overs but then Rowena Squires was run out and Luisa Madgwick (Castle Hill) was bowled immediately, leaving Kent reeling at 24-4. 

A useful 50 run partnership between Sarah Martins (Bells Yew Green) and her captain brought some respectability to the innings, but then Hannah Mount retired not out on 26. Martins and Tammy Roscoe (Colfeians Girls) were both bowled as Surrey brought back their opening attack. Only 16 runs were added in the last six overs. Kent’s final total of 96 was desperately short.

In contrast to Kent, thanks to some loose bowling, Surrey’s innings exploded with a series of fours and the home side raced to 32 in five overs.  Kent did not help their cause by dropping catches, and the ground fielding was not much better.

Kent did manage to slow Surrey’s progress around the ten over mark, but Kent’s bowlers could not bowl a consistent line and length and, therefore, could not exert any pressure to force mistakes.  With time on their side, the Surrey batsmen batted sensibly, keeping out all of Kent’s good balls, and hitting the bad ones.

Surrey comfortably reached their target off 19 overs to inflict Kent’s first defeat of the season.

Kent Won by 23 Runs

Kent Under 11 girls bounced back to winning ways with a comfortable win over Middlesex in 20-20 match at Regent’s Park, a splendid ground in the heart of London developed for the local community by Middlesex Cricket Board, Capital Kids Cricket and the Lord’s Taverners.

In overcast, damp conditions, Kent lost the toss and were put in.  Kent made a poor and nervous start and failed to capitalise on some hittable bowling and a short boundary.  Openers Phillipa Hempfrey (Hythe & Sibton Park) and Hannah Mount (St Lawrence & Highland Court) were both bowled by ‘grubbers’ and then Hollie Summers (Sandwich Town & Holmesdale) was run out after a mix up with Rowena Squires (Staplehurst). 

Kent were teetering on 22-3 with a third of the overs gone, however, the situation was rescued with an excellent 50 run partnership between Rowena Squires and Marina Barwick (St Lawrence & Highland Court).  After Squires retired not out, Sarah Martins (Bells Yew Green) joined Barwick and with a combination of lusty blows and quick singles, took the score to 81 after 17 overs.  Shottie Hopkins (Mote Ladies and Headcorn) joined Martins and their 30 run partnership in the final three overs took the score to 111, leaving Kent in a strong position.

With dark clouds threatening to curtail the match, Hollie Summers bowled the Middlesex opener first ball.  Keeper Rowena Squires took a good catch off the fifth ball, and then Summers bowled their number 4 with her final ball, leaving Middlesex reeling at 4-3 after one over.

Things went quiet after the explosive start.  The fact that Hollie was on a hat trick went completely unnoticed when she started her second over.  Gusty wind conditions caused havoc among Kent’s bowlers triggering numerous wides.  Remarkably, at the half way stage, Middlesex had more runs on the board compared with the Kent innings and in theory were ‘in with a shout’ of reaching the target.

However, in the 14th over Kent suddenly seized the initiative when Bryony Wicks (Canterbury and St Lawrence and Highland Court) came into the attack.  She took two wickets in her spell.  Megan Grist and Lucy Hirst (both Castle Hill) held sharp catches in the gully, and Hollie Summers effected the season’s first run out with a throw from the outfield to the keeper.  The game was finally wrapped up in Kent’s favour with Marina Barwick tumbling and clinging on to a difficult high catch in the covers off Shottie Hopkins’ bowling.

Kent ended up comfortable winners by 23 runs by virtue of taking 5-35 in the final six overs.

Report of the Arundel Festival for Under 11 Girls - 24 & 25 July 2008

Kent Under 11 Girls played some good and exciting cricket last week during the Arundel Festival where they finished runners up to Surrey.

Held at the beautiful Arundel Castle Cricket Ground and organised by Capital Kids Cricket, the two-day festival featured five south-east county teams from Kent, Sussex, Surrey, Essex and Middlesex.

The format was a round robin league consisting of 12 overs a side matches, two overs per bowler with batters retiring at 15.

Kent were drawn against Surrey in the first match, the only team that had beaten them so far in the season.  Kent posted a creditable 80-3 in 12 overs but chased hard from the start thanks to their strong batting line up.  Hannah Mount’s off spin briefly put a break on their challenge but it was not quite enough as they won with one ball remaining.

The match with Surrey proved to be the most exciting and closely contested of the festival. 

Middlesex were next.  We put them in and they only scored 48.  Kent knocked off the runs in six overs without losing a wicket.

Day 2

We batted first against Sussex and rattled up 85-5.  Sussex could only manage 39 in reply.

We batted first again in our final match against Essex.  Outstanding running between the wickets, with Luisa Madgwick leading the way, enabled us to reach a formidable 84-2.  Kent’s confidence was sky high and we restricted Essex to just 28-5 in 12 overs.

All the 13 strong Kent squad did well but there were notable exceptional performances from five players: 
•    Hollie Summers reached the retirement score of 15 every time in her four innings, totally 66 runs without being out.
•    Hannah Mount’s off spin returned highly impressive figures.
•    8 overs 1 maiden 7 wickets 18 runs 7 wides 2 no balls  (ie 9 runs off the bat in 48 balls)
•    Luisa Madgwick only scored 14 runs in her three innings, but she created ten times as many runs in partnerships with her running between the wickets.
•    Rowena Squires kept wicket brilliantly conceding two byes in 36 overs, and stumping one player off a wide.
•    Bryony Wicks bowled accurately ‘at the death’ in three matches taking 2-20 with only 2 widels

Surrey also beat the teams we had beaten and so they ended up as winners with Kent close behind.  John Barclay, former Sussex captain and Director of the Arundel Cricket Foundation, presented medals to the two teams and closed the festival in his inimitable enthusiastic way. 

The Sussex coaches, who had helped umpire and coach during the festival, commented that that although Kent did not win they were the best team and played the best cricket overall.

Kent improved and played better cricket each time they played and I am sure that if we had met them last, there is a strong likelihood that Kent would have beaten Surrey.

We are very proud of the team’s effort and we have left a very good impression on our hosts and our opponents.  There is also the small matter of getting our own back when we play Surrey at home at Provender this Saturday, 2nd August!
