KYC Under 15 Girls vs Surrey 17th July 2010
Kent played their final U15 Women’s London League, group match v Surrey on Saturday 17th July at St. John’s School, Leatherhead. The wicket was very dry and there was some debate amongst the girls whether to bat or bowl first, but Captain Grace Gibbs won the toss and decided to have a bowl. This looked a good decision when she bowled opener Lee for 0 in the first over.
After this, the Surrey girls batted with determination and though Kent kept the run rate down to around 3 an over; wickets were hard to come by. When Gibbs caught Kelly off the bowling of left hander Tash Farrant in the 9th over, Surrey were 31 for 2. Then Charlotte Pape took a catch off the bowling of Olivia Price in the 16th to dismiss top scorer Walter for 31 with Surrey on 53 off 16 overs.
Surrey then put on a partnership of 47 for the 4th wicket, though it did take them 17 overs and it was the turn of opening bowler Pape to come back and clean bowl Buckland for 27 in the 33rd over. This made way for Lottie Bryan to pinch 2 quick wickets at the end and for Gibbs to take her second catch. With Surrey finishing on 116 for 6 off their 35 overs, this was the first time that Kent hadn’t bowled out their opposition since the first match v Middlesex.
With regular opener Katherine Long playing for the under Kent 17 team, Charlotte Pape joined Emma Marsh to open the Kent innings. After making a solid start, Pape was bowled by Iqbal in the 6th over for 8 and it was left to Marsh and Bryan to finish the innings for Kent, coming home with more than 5 overs to spare. Marsh finished on 54 not out and Bryan was 38 not out. The scorers had the best view of the day from the score box on the pavilion roof and the spectators appreciated the electronic scoreboard, which saved us from adding up on our fingers as Marsh headed towards her second 50 of the season for Kent.
Kent finish Champions of the London Group with an unbeaten 7 matches out of 7 and with one match cancelled due to rain. They face a home tie in the quarter finals on 14th August versus the North Champions, Yorkshire, who knocked them out of the under 13 championship in the semi finals 2 years ago. However the Kent girls are stronger, more experienced and more determined now, so watch out Yorkshire! Go Kent!!!!!
