Kent Under 15 girls started their 2010 league season with a home match versus Middlesex on Saturday 15th May. Captain Grace Gibbs won the toss and Middlesex were asked to bat first on an overcast and windy Brooklands CC pitch.

Kent got off to an excellent start with opening bowlers, Grace Gibbs and Charlotte Pape, tying the openers down to 9 for 1 off the first 10 overs. While the scoreboard ticked over very slowly and with Kent continuing to take wickets at regular intervals, Middlesex didn’t reach their 50 till the 25th over.

With Middlesex 6 wickets down, Kent seemed in command but the batters dug in and only lost one more wicket, finishing on 92 for 7 after their 35 overs. With only 2 Middlesex batters into double figures, the extras were the top scorer.

The best of the bowlers were Emma Waters, 3 for 10 off 6 and Grace Gibbs, 2 for 4 off 6. Olivia Price and Phillipa Skelton-Hook took the other 2 wickets and reserve keeper Kayleigh Roscoe took a great catch behind the stumps off Gibbs’ bowling.

A rain shower at the end of the Middlesex innings dampened the pitch and when Kent went out to bat, Middlesex seemed to be getting much more bounce. Despite a solid start by Katherine Long and Lottie Bryan (1st wicket partnership of 26) Long’s dismissal heralded a run of caught dismissals and Kent were 6 wickets down when Olivia Price and Phillipa Skelton-Hook came together and steadied the ship with a partnership of 30. When they were both dismissed shortly after the drinks break, Emma Marsh and Emma Waters came to the crease. They took their time and steered Kent home finishing on 93 for 8 with 8.2 overs to spare.

Skelton-Hook finished top scorer on 23, Long on 19 and Waters on 14 not out.
