The wicket was a bit up and down with more than the occasional ball keeping low. The outfield also undulated with balls sporadically bouncing higher than expected. Hertfordshire bowled quite well, particularly their opening bowler and one of the spinners who went for only 38 runs off 18 overs.
Mike Dowding batted very sensibly in resurrecting the innings which saw Kent at one stage 40-4 off 13 overs. He was ably supported by Thirkell and Meddins. When Stent joined Meddings he was particularly harsh towards the end of the innings hitting 2 sixes and 2 fours in a partnership worth 45 runs in 6 overs.
Kent started well after tea, picking up their first wicket in the 3rd over courtesy of Furze seaming one away from the batter who was caught by Sehmi. However, the Herts batters were very positive and it wasn’t until the 15th over that Kent got their second wicket. By then the two Herts batters had put on 50 in 12 overs including eight boundaries. All in all the Herts batters had too many ‘four balls’ which by the end of the innings counted for 80 runs. In comparison there were only 12 boundaries from the Kent batters.
Stent and Thirkell bowled well in tandem restricting the Herts batters to only 50 runs off 18 overs. This helped build pressure toward the latter stage of the Herts innings resulting in ‘delaying’ the loss to the last over.
